Table of Contents

The cervix is a cylinder-shaped neck of tissue that connects the vagina and uterus. It is located at the lowermost part of the uterus. It is made up of fibromuscular tissue.

Two Main Parts of the Cervix

The part of the cervix that can be seen from inside the vagina during a gynecologic examination is known as the ectocervix. Moreover, an opening in the center of the ectocervix, known as the external os, opens to allow passage between the uterus and vagina.

The endocervix, or endocervical canal, is the tunnel through the cervix, from the external os into the uterus. The overlapping border between the endocervix and ectocervix is known as the transformation zone.

The Functions of Cervix

The cervix produces cervical mucus that changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Tracking the mucus can help achieve or prevent pregnancy.

During labor, the cervix dilates widely – giving enough space for the baby to pass through. Meanwhile, during the menstrual period, it allows the passage of menstrual fluid from the uterus.
