Dr Nicolas Kon is a neurosurgeon practicing at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital with special interests in neuro-oncology (brain tumours), minimally-invasive brain surgery, functional neurosurgery (microvascular decompression, spasticity, neuromodulation), and deep brain stimulation. He is also an Adj Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
After medical school, he had postgraduate medical training in neurosurgery and neurocritical care in the UK at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (London), Charing Cross Hospital (London) and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and at the National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore. His PhD was obtained at Imperial College London where he investigated the modulation of cortical plasticity. He did his advanced neurosurgery fellowship in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery at the Toronto Western Hospital, Canada under a world-renowned neurosurgeon.
Prior to joining Mount Elizabeth, he was a consultant neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery, National Neuroscience Institute (Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital campuses). He was the founding co-director of the NNI Centre for Deep Brain Stimulation, and the Centre for Neurotechnological Innovation. He was also the first neurosurgeon in Asia to pioneer the use of minimally invasive neurosurgery using the Brainpath MIPS approach.
He has been actively involved in research to further the field of neurosurgery and is the author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and hold several patents. He has been the principal investigator of many randomized controlled clinic trials and the recipient of national and international research grants. He also serves on the Centralised Institutional Review Board.
He was awarded the long service award by the National Neuroscience Institute for his contributions. For his commitment to patient care, he was awarded several Service with A Heart awards by the Singapore General Hospital.
