Dr Tan Ter Chyan graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1995 with both degrees of MB, BCh , BAO and licentiates of both the RCSI and RCPI.
He completed national service in the RSAF in 1999 after initial training as a medical officer in the Ministry of Health Singapore. He commenced basic surgical specialty training thereafter, completing it in April 2002 and commencing advanced surgical training in Hand Surgery at the National University Hospital, Singapore. He exited from training in 2005.
He was Associate Consultant in the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery (HRM) from 2005 to 2007 and Consultant from 2007 to 2012. Dr Tan was awarded the Higher Manpower Development Program by the Ministry of Health, Singapore in 2006 and was clinical fellow at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in 2007 with the Department of Hand Surgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery, University of Sydney. He was Assistant Professor in the National University of Singapore Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 2008 to 2012.
While at HRM, NUH, he was also the Postgraduate Director and was involved in training the advanced Hand Surgery trainees in the national specialist training program. He was also the first Associate Program Director for the national residency program in Hand Surgery.
Dr Tan with his colleagues founded and commenced private practice at Hand Surgery Associates in 2012.
He has a clinical interest is in minimally invasive surgery of the hand and upper limb especially wrist and small joint arthroscopy and endoscopic peripheral nerve surgery. His other clinical interests include peripheral nerve surgery, including brachial plexus surgery, stroke, cerebral palsy and surgical rehabilitation of the upper limb in tetraplegia.
He is a founder member of the Asia-Pacific Wrist Association (www.apwa.asia) and has been an invited speaker for local, regional and international meetings.
He is currently the Chairman of the Chapter of Hand Surgeons, College of Surgeons, Singapore.
